The Beatles beetles
The Beatles beetles
3rd St NE & M St NE
Washington, DC 20002

In February 1964, the Washington Coliseum (formerly the Uline Arena) hosted the first U.S. concert of the Beatles. Yet there are no overt signs on the premises reminding passersby of the building’s amazing brush with greatness.

The only clue is provided by two brown beetles that some ingenious prankster stenciled years ago onto the pavement outside the venue’s north-side entrance.

For visitors already aware of the building’s place in history, the small and subtle bugs, which have faded over time, pack a wallop like SURRENDER DOROTHY! once did on the Beltway.
