With January’s “Intellectual Property,” Meat Market staged the bravest show of the year and one of the best to boot: The gallery invited artists to download paper plans for the gallery space and propose a show, then installed the 70 proposals. Rex Weil sought to fill the former butcher’s shop with blood; Matthew Sutton proposed paving over the place to make more parking for Safeway. Meat Market achieves the DIY ethic that so many area nonprofits strive for, though a planned move to a larger space may kill the vibe. Despite its antic shows and hipster-magnet openings, the gallery intends to be taken seriously, bringing its artists’ work to the Aqua Wynwood satellite fair during Art Basel Miami.
