You don’t have to look very far in this city to find a bandstand with guitarist Anthony Pirog on it, but this year brought his breakthrough on a much larger platform. The local jazz/rock/avant-garde musician (perhaps best known as half of the experimental duo Janel and Anthony) released his Cuneiform Records debut, the jazz-and-beyond Palo Colorado Dream, in October. It received glowing reviews and made an immediate splash in the New York and national jazz scene. Pirog has even gotten a booking at NYC’s Winter Jazz Fest, the music’s annual exposition of its newest and hippest sonic adventures. It’s yet another demonstration that the District is one of the country’s most important outposts of jazz and improvised music.
