Prince Rama at Comet Ping Pong Monday, Sept. 8

Brooklyn-based psych duo Prince Rama is known for its trippy performances and the over-the-top personalities of sisters Taraka and Nimai Larson. A mixed bag of psychedelic ceremonies and audience participation, the band’s live shows skew more toward performance art than your average concert, with the crowd as much a part of the action as the music itself. (It makes sense, then, that the sisters were raised in a Florida Hare Krishna commune and have been known to deliver lectures while drenched in fake blood.) Discovered by Animal Collective’s Avey Tare in a Texas dive bar, the sisters have released seven albums since 2008. Their most recent, 2012’s Top Ten Hits of the End of the World, is a wholly conceptual offering made up of 10 fictional pop songs recorded by 10 fictional bands. Like the majority of the pair’s releases, the album features a blend of new-age synths and drugged-out guitar hooks that would serve as the perfect soundtrack to kitschy campfire ghost stories. But while Prince Rama’s spaced-out tracks seem fit for another planet entirely, for now, you can catch them here on Earth—with a slice of pizza—at Comet Ping Pong. Prince Rama performs with Video Love and DJ Joshua at 9 p.m. at Comet Ping Pong, 5037 Connecticut Ave. NW. $12. (202) 364-0404. cometpingpong.com.
