Smoke Fairies at DC9 Friday, Sept. 5

Despite the fact that British pop duo Smoke Fairies takes its name from mythical creatures that distract people and cause confusion, its ethereal songs are clear and crisp. Jessica Davies and Katherine Blamire’s brand of folk pop is reminiscent of another European female duo, First Aid Kit, but Smoke Fairies’ sound also hints at the blues, the result of an extended visit to New Orleans in 2002. The band’s latest album, May’s self-titled release, remains somewhat ghostly and quiet with more electronic beats, maintaining the character of Smoke Fairies’ earlier work without being overshadowed by experimental additions. The haunting balladry of tracks like “Eclipse Them All” gets an extra dose of gloom from organ-like synths, a kind of brooding that creates the perfect early autumn soundtrack. Smoke Fairies perform with Marian McLaughlin at 6:30 p.m. at DC9, 1940 9th St. NW. $10. (202) 483-5000. dcnine.com.
