Wild Beasts at 9:30 Club Saturday, July 12

It would be almost too perfectly punny to say that indie rockers Wild Beasts stampeded onto hipster rock radar’s with their 2009 album Two Dancers, but that’s more or less what they did. That album garnered plenty of positive reviews and even a Mercury Award nomination, no small feat for an obscure band from Kendal, England. Now, they’re charging through the 9:30 Club on a brief North American tour fueled by a new album, Present Tense, which was created during nearly a full year of uninterrupted work. The title track, “Wanderlust,” eschews the lead guitars of the band’s previous albums for synth sounds, but retains lead singer Hayden Thorpe’s haunting falsetto vocals. Coupled with the working-class vibe that defines the band’s sound, Thorpe’s uncouth voice is the perfect vessel for the band’s politically charged message, one that lands squarely in favor of the 99 percent. Wild Beasts perform with Mutual Benefit at 8 p.m. at 9:30 Club, 815 V St. NW. $20. (202) 265-0930. 930.com.
