Singer and songwriter Alice Smith’s music is an amalgam of classic R&B, soul, rock, and a bit of jazz, but all her influences blend into a seamless, timeless sound. Smith’s voice has a distinct, multifaceted power: It carries songs like “Dreams” with its sultry strength, brings a piercing clarity to “The One,” and brightens the lazy Sunday haze of “Be Easy.” But what’s exceptional about Smith’s music is how it soars in her live performances, especially in “The One,” which hits the heart hard when Smith’s pipes are paired with nothing but an acoustic guitar. Her voice has a naked honesty that lays bare her emotions while digging into the listener’s, too. Alice Smith performs at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Howard Theatre, 620 T St. NW. $25–$60.
