The Secret Sisters at Birchmere Wednesday, June 18

Plucked straight from the days of front porch courtin’ and transistor radios, the Secret Sisters’ rootsy harmonies are unapologetically old school. The country/folk duo—real-life sisters Laura and Lydia Rogers—spin vivid tales of forced weddings and family feuds that are equal parts pride and passion. But while their music pays homage to a bygone era, the duo is supported by some of today’s biggest names: Their debut 45 was released by Jack White’s Third Man Records, followed by a self-titled, cover-heavy LP produced by country legend T Bone Burnett. Packed with fiddles, saloon pianos, and plenty of pedal steel, the Sisters’ most recent release, Put Your Needle Down, finds the pair stretching their songwriting chops with some help from collaborators like Brandi Carlile and Dan Wilson. The pair’s jazzy harmonies anchor their live performances, drawing comparisons to classic acts like the Everly Brothers and the Andrews Sisters. When they play the Birchmere, expect to hear some mournful ballads like “The One I Love Is Gone,” in addition to a few infectious footstompers. The Secret Sisters perform at 7:30 p.m. at the Birchmere, 3701 Mount Vernon Ave., Alexandria. $20. (703) 549-7500. birchmere.com.
