Six Americans at Millennium Stage Monday, June 16

In addition to hosting touring musicals and ballet companies, the Kennedy Center cultivates young artists through partnerships with arts organizations nationwide. On Monday, six alumni of the National Endowment for the Arts’ Young Artists’ program will present original scenes that examine the program’s history and impact, as well as the performers’ understanding of American identity. The young artists who crafted the scenes work with distinguished performers like Anna Deavere Smith and Marisa Tomei to hone their theatrical skills, then share their completed pieces with an audience at the Kennedy Center. The emphasis may be on their youth (the program supports artists in high school and college), but if you’re slightly curious about the future of American theatre, take this chance to hear some emerging voices. Who knows—you might see the next Tony Kushner in his artistic infancy. The performance begins at 6 p.m. at the Kennedy Center Theater Lab, 2700 F St. NW. Free. (202) 467-4600. kennedy-center.org.
