Fuck Buttons at U Street Music Hall Friday, June 13

Fuck Buttons is an uncensored group—and that goes beyond FCC-fineable offenses. The duo from Bristol, England, creates mysterious electronic assaults that haunt listeners on its latest album, Slow Focus. Tracks like “Year of the Dog” are aural hellscapes decked in ominous choruses, manic strings, and pulsating synth tones. Like the best H.R. Geiger paintings, the album is both spooky and morbidly enticing, and songs like “Prince’s Prize” embrace a fun kind of roving horror, like screaming your way through a haunted house attraction at Six Flags. For inspiration, the artists turned inward: Only the mind’s eye can create the kind of alien, abandoned feeling they evoke. Despite the dark tone, the album retains a kind of head-nodding dance quality rarely found outside of weird, underground acid raves. Whether you’re an evil genius or a deep thinker, the live show probably has something for you. Leave the mind-melting philosophical tangents to the band. Fuck Buttons performs with Protect-U at 7 p.m. at U Street Music Hall, 1115 U St. NW. $20. (202) 588-1889. ustreetmusichall.com.
