LGBT Health Policy & Practice Program How George Washington University is helping LGBTQ health "go mainstream"

After the Institute of Medicine released its inconclusive 2011 report on the state of health and LGBT people, George Washington University psychology professor Steven Forssell decided it was time for those working in the field of LGBT health to, as he puts it, “go mainstream.” Two years later, by June 2013, he’d enrolled a full cohort of policy analysts and health practitioners in the nation’s only LGBT health policy and practice graduate program. From Clinton Solicitor General Walter Dellinger to Senator Tammy Baldwin and President Obama’s LGBT Liaison Gautam Raghavan, the program’s first year has boasted a robust guest list and permanent faculty of leaders and scholars. Beyond the classroom, the program will host an annual open-to-the-public LGBT Health Forum, the inaugural installment of which centers on global health and human rights. “We want students to go out and make change happen,” Forssell says.
