Clap Your Hands Say Yeah at U Street Music Hall Monday, June 2

Nine years. That’s how much time has elapsed since the release of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah’s self-titled debut, a wonderful record of wistful, jangly indie pop that should have been the jumping off point for a long, brilliant career in music. But it didn’t exactly go that way. After a poorly received sophomore LP (Some Loud Thunder), the band went on an extended hiatus, lost some members, changed up its sound, changed up its sound again, and has since struggled to make an album as good as its first one. Amid the turmoil, though, CYHSY, which is set to release its fourth record, Only Run, next month, remains a strong, entertaining live act, albeit one that still relies heavily on material from its younger days. Frontman Alec Ounsworth probably loathes “Heavy Metal” and “In This Home on Ice” at this point, but at least he understands that the band’s legacy rests squarely on “the skin of his yellow country teeth.” Clap Your Hands Say Yeah performs with Stagnant Pools at 7 p.m. at U Street Music Hall, 1115 U St. NW. $16.
