Eagulls at Rock & Roll Hotel Wednesday, May 14

You know summer is almost here when a massively hyped guitar band from England makes its way to a slew of gigs on the East Coast. Last year, for example, London’s Savages blew the lid off Rock & Roll Hotel only to play a sold-out show at the 9:30 Club a few months later. This year’s band is Eagulls, a post-punk quintet from Leeds. Their songs are propulsive and instantly familiar: Anyone with a passing appreciation of Ian Curtis or Gang of Four will find their hooks welcoming. But the swirling guitar distortion and relentless percussion are not what makes the band worth seeing. Instead, it’s the vocals of George Mitchell, whose anguished lyrics land somewhere between defiance and despair. After a memorable set at South by Southwest this year, Eagulls are about to have their moment. Grab this chance to see them before they become too cool for small rooms. Eagulls perform with Twin Peaks at 8 p.m. at Rock & Roll Hotel, 1353 H St. NE. $10. (202) 388-7625. rockandrollhoteldc.com.
