Jessica Lea Mayfield at Rock & Roll Hotel Wednesday, April 30

When her first album, With Blasphemy So Heartfelt, debuted in 2008, Jessica Lea Mayfield seemed destined for a career of singing rootsy folk-rock songs. Black Keys frontman Dan Auerbach was compelled by Mayfield’s demo and produced the Ohio native’s first two albums, collections of anti-love songs tinged with regret. On her latest release, Make My Head Sing…, she’s shaken the acoustic ethos of her past in favor of grinding guitars and pounding drums. “I’m insane, I wanna love you/ You’re gonna find this out,” she chants on “I Wanna Love You,” departing from the romantic detachment she espouses on earlier tracks. What remains from Mayfield’s bluegrass roots is a slight vocal twang and breathy delivery, reminding listeners that a harder-rocking new approach hasn’t completely changed her sound. Jessica Lea Mayfield performs with Gambles and The Petticoat Tearoom at 8 p.m. at Rock & Roll Hotel, 1353 H St. NE. $15. (202) 388-7625.
