Calvin Love at DC9 Tuesday, March 25

According to Calvin Love’s Facebook page, the Canadian musician is “currently residing in transit.” The same could be said for Love’s genre-bending, border-crossing sound. When Love wrote his latest album, New Radar, he had just moved back to wintry Alberta, Canada, from sun-soaked Los Angeles. Broke, cold, and off the radar, Love embarked on a winter-long personal experiment to translate his life experiences into song—mixing lush L.A. dream-pop with the raw, feverish sound of the first punk band he started at 13. The result is a surprisingly lovely mix of crooning vocals, synthy beats, and lyrics that conjure a new type of love song. Instead of merely telling his lady he digs her, he explains that “my bones dance for you” on the album’s closing track. Solitary reflection, it turns out, can yield quite cheerful results. Calvin Love performs with TOPS at 9 p.m. at DC9, 1940 9th St. NW. $10–$12. (202) 483-5000. dcnine.com.
