Lord Dying at DC9 Tuesday, Feb. 25

Musicians and bands can sometimes be best described with clothing, food, and intoxicants. Donna Summer is a satin jumpsuit with a plunging neckline accompanied by green juice laced with cocaine. Lee “Scratch” Perry is a mesh tank top with nylon short shorts and a pineapple stuffed with collie weed. Lord Dying is torn, beer-soaked jeans with a dirty denim jacket dusted with Cheetos powder and stained by Monster Energy Drink. There is nothing frilly or clean or healthy about this Portland, Ore., metal quartet: Lord Dying is pure functional brutality, capable of cutting down entire swaths of pristine Pacific Northwest forest with a single swing of a guitar. The group’s debut, Summon the Faithless, came out on Relapse Records last year, and its combination of thrashy riffs and sludgy grooves summons some of the label’s brightest stars of the past (Mastodon) and present (Red Fang). It’s powerfully ugly, not good for you, and the best damn junk you’ll eat all week. Rub it all over your black XXXL High on Fire T-shirt. Lord Dying performs with Fortress and Earthling at 8 p.m. at DC9, 1940 9th St. NW. $10. (202) 483-5000. dcnine.com.
