Richard III at Folger Elizabethan Theatre Thursday, Feb. 6

With all the snow, ice, and polar vortices that have touched down in D.C. this month, it might be fair to call this season “the winter of our discontent.” Still, freezing temperatures and brutal winds are no comparison to the suffering inflicted by the title character in Shakespeare’s Richard III. The tale of the maniacal hunchback’s rise to power and fall from grace has returned to the Folger Theatre. But now audiences can see the death and destruction from all angles: The theater has gone in-the-round. Drew Cortese (recently in Studio Theatre’s Motherfucker with the Hat) stars, but watch out for potential scene-stealing from young brothers Holden and Remy Brettell, who play Prince Edward and the Prince of York and defy Richard’s directives. Their youthful trickery livens an otherwise chilling affair. The show runs Jan. 28 to March 9 at Folger Elizabethan Theatre, 201 East Capitol St. SE. $30–$72. (202) 544-4600. folger.edu.
