Impossible! A Happenstance Circus at Round House Theatre Silver Spring Friday, Jan. 31

Happenstance Theater is experiencing a bout of depression—great depression. Starting tonight, the touring theater company unpacks its caravan after a trip to the New Orleans Fringe Festival and neatly rearranges it onstage at Silver Spring’s Round House Theatre for Impossible! A Happenstance Circus. Set in 1930s America, the troupe’s new show poses a simple question: What’s a circus like without the funding? Gone are the brass bands, manic lions, and fear-inducing clown getups—after the stock market crashed, who could afford them? Instead, it’s a visual showcase of skill, talent, and passion created by the performers themselves. The Happenstance team conjures a theatrical collage and creates a circus built on imagination. Expect the company to assume the roles of stiltwalkers, jugglers, puppeteers, and musicians, and switch between colorful circus costumes and worn-down getups suitable for a bread line or a Cherry Poppin’ Daddies concert. The show runs Jan. 31 to Feb. 9 at Round House Theatre Silver Spring, 8641 Colesville Road, Silver Spring. $15–$25. (240) 644-1100. roundhousetheatre.org.
