Spirit Animal at Black Cat Backstage Thursday, Jan. 30

We’re living in the “Age of Advice,” according to a 2012 track by Spirit Animal, an electronicish rock band of DMV origins now based in New York. So here’s some advice for Thursday night: If you missed the Black Cat’s Broncho show last week, take another trip to 14th Street NW for Spirit Animal’s similarly garage punk–inclined show. The group—which is all over the place, genre-wise—writes lyrics that examine cultural absurdities, among other things. “Lead!” draws attention to a common prejudice: “Have you noticed that the kids without kids think less of the kids with kids? I know I did!” Tonight, expect those observations baked into thick slabs of shred-and-crunch guitar. Spirit Animal performs with Honest Haloway and Motion Lines at Black Cat Backstage, 1811 14th St. NW. $12. (202) 667-4490. blackcatdc.com.
