Jon B. at Howard Theatre Friday, Jan. 3

After spending the early ’90s penning R&B hits for big names including Toni Braxton and Michael Jackson, Jon B broke out in 1995 with his debut album, Bonafide, featuring the Babyface duet “Someone to Love.” He returned two years later with Cool Relax, the double-platinum album that wheedled its way into hearts with “They Don’t Know,” B’s most successful single to date. His third effort, 2001’s Pleasures U Like, included “Don’t Talk,” the songwriter’s ode to finding love in the club years before Usher attempted the same thing, and “Calling On You,” which Drake sampled a decade later on the nostalgic “Cameras.” The Drizzy shout-out gave B a bump in time for his most recent project, 2012’s Comfortable Swagg. A couple of decades after his first instance of fame, Jon B brings his family-man aesthetic and chin-strap beard to the Howard Theatre tonight to relive the glory days—and maybe make some new ones. Jon B performs at 8 p.m. at The Howard Theatre, 620 T St. NW. $20–$25. (202) 803-2899. thehowardtheatre.com.
