A few years ago, I saw the Felice Brothers play at Rock & Roll Hotel. It was among the worst shows I’ve ever seen. Lead singer Ian Felice stared sulkily at the floor for the whole concert, and his brother James couldn’t bring the audience to care much more about the performance than Ian appeared to. Which is a shame, given just how good the folk-rock group can be. The band’s recorded music—and some of its live shows—balance a studied, stonerish apathy with rollicking tunes, to genuinely delightful effect. The group has experimented with a poppier, dancier sound recently, but there’s still nothing to top a full-throated rendition of “Frankie’s Gun!” So which Felice Brothers will come to R&R this time around? If it’s the freewheeling folk stars, you’re in for a treat. And if it’s the ambivalent grumps, well, there’s always Toki. The Felice Brothers perform with Justin Jones at 8 p.m. at Rock & Roll Hotel, 1353 H St. NE. $20. (202) 388-7625. rockandrollhoteldc.com.
