Walter Reed What, no Wegmans?

The developer Hines is putting the finishing touches on CityCenterDC, the downtown development whose retailers will include various luxury bag stores. Urban Atlantic just completed Sky House East near the Southwest Waterfront, where some apartments in the former Environmental Protection Agency HQ will go for more than $3,000 a month. So now that the city has selected a partnership of these two firms to develop Walter Reed, should we expect something similarly luxe at the 67-acre site between 16th Street NW and upper Georgia Avenue? The team proposed a design that includes an arts center, a senior village, various water features, affordable housing, and facilities for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and George Washington University. But neighbors are holding their collective breath for news on a grocery store. Competitor Roadside Development had pitched a Wegmans to much acclaim; while the Rochester-based firm isn’t out of contention now, there’s interest from other grocers, like Whole Foods. Whatever comes, it’ll be more neighborhood-enlivening than the fenced-off former Army medical center that’s there now.
