Scandal, Marion Barry as fan of TV criticism by the mayor-for-life, 140 characters at a time.

Last month, Slate television critic Willa Paskin recapped an entire episode of ABC’s Scandal by simply reading live reactions to it on Twitter. The show—a soapy, occasionally deranged drama based on the life of real-world Washington fixer Judy Smith—has become a ratings hit and a social-media sensation, but rather than let the live-tweets take over my feed each Thursday, I’ve tried to enjoy the show solely via the Twitter account of its most famous fan: Ward 8 Councilmember and mayor-for-life Marion Barry. (Factoid! Smith was once Barry’s crisis manager.) Back in May, during a particularly juicy episode, Barry got so excited he nearly spoiled the evening for the DVR crowd: “Wow! Scandal just got even more SCANDALOUS!!!” he tweeted, and then, “It seems to obvious that Cyrus would be the mole. Cyrus??? What do you think?” On it went, with Barry debating the identity of the mole with other Twitter users into the night. Perhaps the councilmember ought to consider monetizing his fandom; maybe Slate needs another recapper next season. Then again, he’s kind of in the tank. “SCANDAL SCANDAL SCANDAL!!!!!” Barry tweeted. “This show is incredible!!!!”
