Gregory, David NBC host gets off easy

For advocates of tighter restrictions on guns, 2013 was mostly frustrating—months of debate after last December’s mass shooting in Newtown, Conn., led to precisely no changes in federal law. Here in the District, it was gun control opponents who were upset. D.C. Attorney General Irv Nathan, exercising “prosecutorial discretion,” decided not to charge Meet the Press host David Gregory with violating local gun laws when he waved around a 30-round magazine on the air in late 2012. The magazine was illegal to possess in D.C.; progun groups were outraged that a member of the liberal media got to have one for demonstration purposes, but regular citizens couldn’t for self-defense. The rest of us wondered both why anyone needed a 30-round magazine for self-defense and why David Gregory needed one to make a point.
