Slayer at Fillmore Silver Spring Tuesday, Nov. 19

When Slayer bassist-vocalist Tom Araya sings the lyrics of 2006’s “Jihad” on the album Christ Illusion, he sounds every bit the terrorist depicted in the song. But that, too, is an illusion: Despite Slayer’s 32 years of confounding conservative folks with outrageous tunes, the veteran thrashers simply traffic in the same obscene fantasy as horror films. No one in Slayer is, in fact, a “Necrophiliac” (Hell Awaits, 1985). But reality crashed down on Slayer earlier this year when guitarist Jeff Hanneman died from alcohol-related cirrhosis. Even before that, Araya, 52, had kicked booze, ate healthy, and practiced secular meditation before concerts. He and guitarist Kerry King are the group’s lone original members, though drummer Paul Bostaph and Exodus guitarist Gary Hart are longtime associates who will help keep Slayer’s violent illusion alive—even though real life is much scarier. Slayer performs with Gojira at 7:30 p.m. at Fillmore Silver Spring, 8656 Colesville Road, Silver Spring. $45. (301) 960-9999. fillmoresilverspring.com.
