VelocityDC at Sidney Harman Hall Thursday, Oct. 10

New York’s annual 10-day-long dance blitz is called Fall for Dance. In D.C., the same concept, packed into just three days with 30 local companies, is known as VelocityDC. Starting tonight, Shakespeare Theatre Company, Dance/Metro DC, and the Washington Performing Arts Society kick off the festival’s fifth edition at Sidney Harman Hall. On opening night, you’ll see more or less traditional work from the Washington Ballet’s studio company and Edwin Aparicio’s flamenco troupe. But the event’s emerging performers seem more intriguing: Airborne!DC, an aerial acrobatic ensemble, brings clowning and dance techniques to the air above the Harman Hall stage, and Reston’s Gin Dance Company, which unfortunately has no connection to tonic and limes, performs works influenced by ballet, modern, and traditional Taiwanese dance. The fest will surely have its peaks and valleys, but with each show priced at $18, it’s a steal. The festival runs Oct. 10 to 12 at Sidney Harman Hall, 610 F St. NW. $18.
