London Grammar at U Street Music Hall Sunday, Oct. 6

London Grammar’s Hannah Reid possesses a voice as thick and dark as her eyebrows. Her haunting vocals float over the music created by Dan Rothman and Dot Major, and she somehow recalls the singing style of both Nico and Adele: Reid has the latter’s mainstream tonal polish while still projecting a hint of the former’s icy drama. London Grammar’s debut album, If You Wait, recalls the minimalist trip-tronica of The xx and, more specifically, the early ’90s group One Dove, which also had a great female singer fronting smartly produced chill-out tracks created by two dudes. But considering One Dove was active when Reid & Co. were in diapers, it’s more likely that London Grammar simply stumbled upon sounding like one of best pop-dance crossover acts of that era. London Grammar performs at 6 p.m. at U Street Music Hall, 1115 U St. NW. $15. (202) 588-1880. ustreetmusichall.com.
