Yes, D.C. seems to host a disproportionate number of film festivals, but none are as fun as the annual Spooky Movie International Horror Film Festival. That’s because Spooky Movie feels less like a film festival and more like a live rendering of a bizarre late-night cable access show. At this year’s festival, as Spooky takes over AFI Silver Theatre, hundreds of devoted horror aficionados will flock (or lurch) to Silver Spring for 10 days of campy cult films and gory monster movies. But when they arrive, attendees are more likely to encounter the ghost of splatter king Herschell Gordon Lewis than Alfred Hitchcock. Bring a change of pants.
