The Lyons Nov. 27–Dec. 22 at Round House Theatre Bethesda

For more than two decades, Nicky Silver has been writing about unhappy families led by mothers so abrasive they could give Livia Soprano the willies, but not until last year did one of his plays make it to Broadway. That show, The Lyons, covers what would seem to be well-trod ground for him—a civil war among the Lyon clan, who have gathered in a hospital room to wait out their cancer-ridden patriarch’s final hours. Though it’s making its area debut at Round House, several of its cast members (Naomi Jacobson, Kimberly Gilbert) are regulars are Woolly Mammoth, the place where pivotal Silver plays like Fat Men in Skirts and The Food Chain premiered back in the early ‘90s. So it’s almost like a homecoming, or a reunion—albeit a happier one than Silver’s families are likely to have.
