Brian Brooks Moving Company at American Dance Institute Saturday, Sept. 7

Brian Brooks Moving Company is the three-sport jock of New York’s smaller dance troupes. Its performance at American Dance Institute is titled “Run Don’t Run,” so head to Rockville for a show that may resemble a highly choreographed track meet. These dancers might not have the incredible speed of Usain Bolt, but they’re as gutsy as your average Olympic hurdlers and agile as pole vaulters. The athletic nature of the work isn’t surprising: Brooks learned from Elizabeth Streb, a choreographer known for her love of bungee cords and trampolines. In August, Brooks debuted a duet with the ballerina Wendy Whelan that looked more like a high-stakes game of trust falls than a pas de deux. His company has been in residence at ADI all week, fine-tuning and rehearsing “Run Don’t Run.” Officially, the work premieres next month at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, but this preliminary heat is well worth watching.

Brian Brooks Moving Company performs at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday at American Dance Institute, 1570 East Jefferson St., Rockville. $15–$30. (855) 263-2623. americandance.org.
