Ask any local dancers about performing at Dance Place, and they will likely give you an earful about the dressing areas. The tiny concrete cells more closely resemble a state park bathroom than a proper place to stretch and prepare for a performance. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty of love for the Brookland venue that has been fulcrum of the local dance scene for decades. So tonight, tappers, cloggers, performance artists, and dancers of all styles gather to say goodbye to Dance Place as they know it, because the building closes for a massive renovation on August 10. DJ Glowstick provides the music for tonight’s Bringin’ Down the House Party, and everyone in attendance is invited to speak at an open mic, record messages on a memory wall, and learn the “CP Shuffle,” a line dance choreographed by Dance Place co-director Carla Perlo. Remember those steps when you learn them, because Perlo plans to lead the same routine in March when a renovated Dance Place opens, complete with the creature comforts local dancers and their supporters deserve.
The party begins at 8 p.m.at Dance Place, 3225 8th St. NE. Free, reservations required. (202) 269-1600. danceplace.org.
