Spin at Signature Theatre Wednesday, July 10

Once. Ghost. Kinky Boots. Adapting movies into musicals is pretty much a meme on Broadway these days. Tonight, Arlington’s Signature Theatre continues the trend, but instead of hopping on the bandwagon, the creative team is jumping on a plane to Seoul. The new musical Spin is based on the hit Korean film Speedy Scandal and produced in collaboration with the Seoul-based OD Company. Neil Bartram and Brian Hill, a pair best known for Story of My Life, a show that ran for just five nights on Broadway, adapted the film into its current form. But they’d probably like you to forget about Story of My Life, and instead focus on this new musical about a fading pop star dealing with unexpected paternity issues. The cast includes a whopping 15 actors, led by James Gardiner; most are Signature regulars, including Carolyn Cole, Erin Driscoll, and Harry A. Winter. What’s not regular is the price: Since it’s part of siglab, the theater’s musical development series, tickets are only $29. Which means lucky patrons can afford to take a risk on a K-pop summer diversion without leaving the continent.

The musical runs July 9 to July 27 at Signature Theatre, 4200 Campbell Ave., Arlington. $29. (703) 820-9771. signature-theatre.org.
