DisordR at St. Elizabeths Hospital Saturday, May 11

Hoarding, a condition that will be classified as a mental health disorder when the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders is released, is officially entertainment, thanks to reality television. But playwright and performer Hilary Kacser, a 2013 D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities grant recipient, has taken the idea of hoarding in another direction with her play, DisordR, which focuses on a character trying to overcome her obsession with collecting. While Kacser’s impressions of the various support groups and treatment plans may induce a few giggles, her approach is a lot less exploitative than the gross-out visuals on Hoarding: Buried Alive. We’ll take the lesson without photos of rat feces, thanks.

The performance begins at 7 p.m. at St. Elizabeths Hospital, 1100 Alabama Ave. SE. Free, reservations recommended. (202) 553-5695. disordertheplay.blogspot.com.
