Guadalajara, Mexico cumbiatronica duo Los Master Plus enjoys performing catchy melodies as much as they like bobbing their heads to their own beats. For the cowboy hat- and ironic mustache-wearing Master Plus guys Comanche and Larry Mon, this means turning pop songs like No Doubt’s “Don’t Speak” and The Bee Gees’ “Stayin’ Alive” into Spanish-language dancefloor-fillers. While hipsters worldwide are just jumping on the cumbia bandwagon, this three-year-old group plumbs Latino artists from the past, like 1950s singer/actor El Piporro, 1960s bolero-rock combo Los Angeles Negros, and 1990s techno-cumbia outfit Mi Banda el Mexicano; the duo combines guitar, drums, and laptops to create its own mix of folk and funk. The traditional stuff will bend your ear just as much as “El Extraño,” Master Plus’ cover of Radiohead’s “Creep.”
Los Master Plus perform with Bio Ritmo at 8:30 p.m. at Tropicalia, 2001 14th St. NW. $10. (202) 629-4535. tropicaliadc.org.
