Plenty of electronic acts are content to entertain their crowds by simply twisting knobs, exhibiting their talents with all the flair of a sleepy soundman. Others may tack on a frenzied light show to compensate for the lack of physical performance. Ital’s work is good enough not to necessitate any live-show frills, but the man puts on an impressive footwork display. When Ital performed at DC9 in September, he stomped and slid like an aquaphobe caught in a rainstorm behind his table of gear. The small crowd seemed happy enough with the jittery sounds, but not quite as thrilled as Ital. His shimmying showed a visible passion far more entertaining than any eye-straining laser show could ever be. The small turnout at the D.C.-bred musician’s September show was surprising, especially considering the excellent acts he shared the stage with, including Laurel Halo and his partner in Mi Ami, Damon Palermo. A turn at Comet Ping Pong could fare better with hometown support from Maxmillion Dunbar and a DJ set from Protect-U.
Ital performs with Container, Maxmillion Dunbar, and Protect-U at 9 p.m. at Comet Ping Pong, 5037 Connecticut Ave. NW. $10. (202) 364-0404. cometpingpong.com.
