Bebel Gilberto at 9:30 Club Thursday, Feb. 28

From a musical family that included her bossa nova musician dad, Joao Gilberto, New York-born Brazilian singer Bebel Gilberto breathily croons in Portuguese and English. She’s no purist, though she does warble over an acoustic guitar, too; the 46-year-old singer has recorded loungey tracks with the likes of Thievery Corporation, as well as albums of clubby remixes. Her most recent effort, 2009’s All in One, adds a smooth sheen to a variety of styles. She goes easy listening on the title track, then switches to Motown-meets-disco on “The Real Thing,” and also covers her father’s jazzy “Bim Bom.” The most successful cuts are the least produced—like “Far From the Sea,” with her lilting, delicate melody over gentle acoustic accompaniment, and the sensual phrasing of “Canção de Amor.” Now a guitarist herself, she has promised that her next album will emphasize her organic approach. Perhaps she’ll try to turn the 9:30 Club into a late-afternoon beach in Rio.

Bebel Gilberto performs at 7 p.m. at 9:30 Club, 815 V St. NW. $35. (202) 265-0930.
