Harry and the Potters at Black Cat Backstage Monday, Feb. 18

Superfans of J.K. Rowling already know they’ll be summoning themselves to the Black Cat tonight: The club certainly sounds like a Potterverse venue, maybe a seedier version of the Hog’s Head; and the staff do their part to set the mood, as bartenders like Chad America all look more or less like Hagrid. The Cat has also gone and booked Harry & the Potters, the best magical family act since the Weird Sisters. Right around the time Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix was released, brothers Joe and Paul DeGeorge composed a suite of fanboy songs and recorded them as an eponymous album. A follow-up record, Voldemort Can’t Stop the Rock!, arrived the following year. Muggles take note: Every song is devoted to some corner of Rowling’s universe, but the band also pays tribute to a Weezer/Rentals era of jangly guitar, sing-song choruses, and analog synthesizers. A decade later, I’m still humming the chorus about saving Ginny Weasley from the basilisk.

Harry and the Potters perform at 6:30 p.m. at the Black Cat Backstage, 1811 14th St. NW. $12. (202) 667-4490. blackcatdc.com.
