The Tempest Feb. 21-March 24 at Synetic Theater

Rarely since the days of Cherry Red Productions has a D.C. theater company been able to talk of “splash zone” seating at their shows. Back in those days, it was usually fake blood that posed the threat. But in the case of Synetic Theater’s wordless production of Shakespeare’s The Tempest (the ninth selection in the company’s ongoing “silent Shakespeare” series), it’s just water: The company has promised a “water-filled” stage for this show, which is teased with an impressionistic trailer shot entirely underwater. Actors performing behind glass in an on-stage aquarium at Synetic’s Arlington space seems far-fetched, but whatever the case, it’s bound to take the Bard’s story of a magically initiated storm of epic proportions to unusually literal ends. $15-$50.
