Joshua Beamish May 18-19 at American Dance Institute

Recommending a work-in-progress by a little-known 25-year-old is clearly a risk. But that’s the whole point of the American Dance Institute’s incubator program: pick an artist who has talent and potential (if not a reputation), provide him or her with the resources to create and rehearse a piece, then show it off in ADI’s intimate in-house theater. In this case, Joshua Beamish, artistic director of Move: the company, seems like a good bet. Though young, the British Columbia native is a shockingly elegant mover whose company features a host of similarly classically trained dancers. At ADI, he’ll be working on a piece tentatively titled Pierced, an evening-length show about the myth of Cupid’s arrow and the trials involved in finding true love. Cheesy? Great? At this point, it could be either: That’s the adventure inherent in watching a lesser-known talent develop. $15–$30.
