2 Chainz at Fillmore Saturday, Jan. 19

“OK now ketchup to my campaign/ Coupe the color of mayonnaise.” 2 Chainz’s condiment couplet is easily the highlight of “Mercy,” the ubiquitous pop single by Kanye West and his G.O.O.D. Music crew. You wish the Atlanta-based rapper’s verse could explore the complete range of culinary braggadocio forever because it is, unfortunately, his best and maybe only real contribution to the game. True, he’s done plenty over the last year. He holds up his part on “Beez in the Trap”—not that Nicki Minaj needs any help—and he does no worse than A$AP Rocky or Kendrick Lamar against the indomitable Drake on “Fuckin’ Problems.” He even released a serviceable, Grammy-nominated album, Based on a T.R.U. Story. But 2 Chainz nevertheless feels like the last gasp of country swagger, an ambassador of an era that’s being overtaken by the confessional and the weird. Still, what he does, he does well: He whipped up an impressive ruckus at Howard University’s Yardfest. If you relish a slightly less cerebral rap performance, then ketchup with him indeed.

2 Chainz performs at 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. at the Fillmore, 8656 Colesville Road, Silver Spring. $35. (301) 960-9999. fillmoresilverspring.com.
