Yuppie Hardware Welcome to the golden age of bougie DIY

Congratulations, you’ve bought a new home! The list of upgrades, maintenance supplies, or unexpected repairs never ends, as you’ll soon find out. Fortunately, though, you’ve moved to D.C. in 2012, as the city is experiencing a hardware-store renaissance; if you shop carefully, you may never have to set foot in the Home Depot on Rhode Island Avenue NE or any of the Lowe’s stores that dot the suburbs. From Annie’s Ace Hardware, which opened in Petworth this spring, to Old School Hardware, rebooted in Mount Pleasant this year, to Gina Schaefer’s mini-empire of Ace franchises in Logan Circle, Mount Vernon Square, and elsewhere, which kicked off the retro-hardware boom in 2003, a new generation of shopkeepers is aiming at a new generation of do-it-yourselfers. The stores sell light bulbs and drill bits, yes, but also neighborhood T-shirts, and you might find a food truck parked outside during your weekend errands.
