SoMo The SoHo-ization of D.C. neighborhood names

Stuck in a neighborhood without a name, known mainly for what streets border it? Just chop the street names up, a la SoHo in New York. In Washington, NoMa had the idea first, but that hasn’t stopped business associations—and sometimes eager blog commenters—from renaming their own patches of the District this year. There were (maybe ironic?) abominations like the GaP (Georgia Avenue-Petworth) and SoNYA (South of New York Avenue), but the most ambitious was SoMo, an attempt to rebrand the businesses around southern Adams Morgan. Despite a blessing from Mayor Vince Gray, the name hasn’t caught on, even in its own neighborhood. The director of the Adams Morgan BID was no fan, calling the rebranding “stupid.” SoMo? Definitely a no-no.
