Six Organs of Admittance at DC9 Monday, Dec. 3

Six Organs of Admittance, singer-songwriter Ben Chasny’s main music venture, has been busy releasing a record (or two) almost every year since 1998. That’s in addition to all his other projects: Chasny’s also played in the now-inactive Comets on Fire, is half of the folky duo 200 Years, and is one-third of Rangda with Chris Corsano and Sir Richard Bishop. And that’s not the whole list. “I just always have ideas in my brain to do stuff,” Chasny says. On his records, he’s touched on folk, noise, psychedelia, and beyond, with his feet planted firmly in the underground. Now, Six Organs of Admittance’s new record, Ascent, returns to headbanging rock ’n’ roll; its extra kick comes courtesy of a fresh collaboration with his Comets on Fire cohorts, who turn out a freewheeling psych-rock record with an outer-space vibe. The opening track, “Waswasa,” wastes no time, leading with a guitar line the Palm Desert scene would be proud to claim. Ascent’s exuberance makes it a fun record to listen to—and no doubt, to play.

Six Organs of Admittance performs with Blues Control at 8 p.m. at DC9, 1940 9th St. NW. $10–$12. (202) 483-5000. dcnine.com
