The Fresh & Onlys at Red Palace Friday, Nov. 9

San Francisco-based band The Fresh & Onlys is among the standard-bearers of the psych-garage sound currently associated with that city. Less in-your-face than other members of the Bay City cohort, the band’s tunes are simple, layered, and bouncy—think ’60s pop and love songs dripping with desperation. Add cleaned-up instrumentals, unpolished vocals, and big, open synths, and you’ve got a general idea of the band’s vibe. While its new album, Long Slow Dance, only hints at an ’80s sound, it was recorded on the same reel-to-reel as Warren Zevon’s “Werewolves of London.” The only howling on these tracks is metaphorical, in the form of lyrical longing.

The Fresh & Onlys perform with Quilt and Shark Week at 9 p.m. at Red Palace, 1212 H St. NE. $10-$12. (202) 300-3201. redpalacedc.com.
