Ignite DC at Town Danceboutique Wednesday, Sept. 26

TED talks are a great way to make people feel smart—or justified in their behavior. Instead of improving their social skills, for example, some may watch “The Power of Introverts” and never leave their homes. The local collective Ignite DC offers its own version of a TED conference. For its 10th talk tonight, topics include “Short is the New Long,” an endorsement of the cheap and breezy e-book, and “Towards a More Open World,” which touches on how some governments are using the Internet for evil. But of all the topics, my favorite is “I Suffered (and Recovered) From FOMO.” FOMO stands for “Fear of Missing Out,” the social “disorder” that arises when friends tell you about some killer event they attended, and you feel anxious over missing it. Should failing to experience Ignite DC’s 10th talk instill FOMO in the masses? Yes! Make sure you’re there, or miss an opportunity to learn all about an acronym more annoying than YOLO.

Ignite DC begins at 6 p.m. at Town Danceboutique, 2009 8th St. NW. $20. ignite-dc.com. (202) 234-8696.
