Soccer Team at Black Cat Backstage Wednesday, Aug. 29

Soccer Team plays on a World Cup schedule. Every four years or so, Ryan Nelson and Melissa Quinley get together and make gold. D.C. rockers who met while working at Dischord Records, the pair released their debut, the postpunk-y “Volunteered” Civility & Professionalism, in 2006, a folk diary that seems to conceal a barely contained angular undercurrent. A tour with the decidedly angular Antelope followed, then nothing. Nelson, who is also known for playing with Beauty Pill and for the drawings that have graced Fort Reno T-shirts for years (anyone remember the year-of-the-cicada shirt?), moved to Kalamazoo, Mich., for school. But in 2010, he reunited with Quinley to finish some long-abandoned recordings, releasing a 7-inch on Lovitt Records and promising more to fans. If history’s any indication, their next full-length should hit record stores right around 2014, but in the meantime, they have some live shows to catch up on.

Soccer Team performs with Speedy Ortiz at 8 p.m. at Black Cat Backstage, 1811 14th St. NW. $8. blackcatdc.com. (202) 667-4490.
