Foul Swoops at Black Cat Backstage Tuesday, Aug. 21

Ian Svenonius is a man of many backing bands, but when his Chain & the Gang closed the season of free concerts at Fort Reno a few weeks back, the supporting players were notable for their youth: Rather than tap his usual pool of fellow D.C.-punk lifers for assistance, Spiv turned to the barely twentysomethings in Foul Swoops. A passing-the-torch moment from the D.C. pop underground’s master of institutional critique? Either way, with their skronky garage-pop gems and youthful spaciness, Foul Swoops offer hope for the current generation of D.C. rawk. They’re in good company on tonight’s bill, which also features anarcho-kiddie-pop unit Priests—featuring Chain & the Gang mainstay Katie Alice Greer, one of the more lively new bandleaders in D.C.—and off-kilter fuzz-rockers Fell Types. The future, it is scrappy. Foul Swoops, Priests, and Fell Types perform at 8 p.m. at Black Cat Backstage, 1811 14th St. NW. $8. blackcatdc.com. (202) 667-4490.
