A place where it’s encouraged to laugh for no reason and to take the time to breathe sounds like something embraced only by blissed-out West Coasters. But for certified laughter yoga leader Diane Cohen, this combination of giggles and meditation holds the power—the ability to relax in hyperspeed D.C. In class, “we shake hands and giggle, or we clap and laugh,” Cohen says. In today’s free, hour-long class at Arlington book shop One More Page, Cohen will orchestrate a series of breathing exercises that incorporate laughter, be it a hearty chuckle or a series of ho-ho’s and ha-ha’s. Laughing yoga began in Mumbai in 1995 with Madan Kataria, who started the program with five people. Since then, the practice has expanded to about 60 countries worldwide. While the classes don’t involve yoga poses (Cohen isn’t a yoga instructor), she says they do help to reduce stress—something plenty of Washingtonians could use.
