YIMBYs Organizing to get something in your back yard

Pretty much every neighborhood has its NIMBYs: Folks who oppose homeless shelters, tall buildings, medical marijuana, and anything else they don’t want nearby. In D.C., official and unofficial neighborhood groups are particularly empowered to organize against intrusions. Rarely does anyone say “yes” with any similar degree of organization. But in upper Northwest, a citizens’ group called Ward 3 Vision re-emerged this year to do just that, lobbying for smart-growth projects that had been stalled by the economy—and by the standard NIMBY fears about traffic, trash, and noise. Similar groups in other areas of the city could seriously change the shape of neighborhood development.
