Timony, Mary Washington's biggest rock star

Is Mary Timony D.C.’s biggest rock star? At the moment, yes. The musician is the only locally based member of Wild Flag, the band that rose from the ashes of Sleater-Kinney, Quasi, The Minders, and Timony's various other groups. Wild Flagthe record—will probably reside comfortably on the tippy-top of many rock journalists' year-end lists. That can’t be said for recent Dischord releases or even our beloved Ian Svenonius, whose smart, funky music remains too strange for the big time. Wild Flag sold out both its Black Cat shows in 2011; next April, the band moves to a bigger room at 9:30 Club, the venue Sleater-Kinney used to pack and a place few local bands can fill. Sure, only one quarter of the band is technically local, but D.C. fans are more than happy with 25 percent.
